What a cheap quote usually leaves out
Not every low number is a bad one, but there are four things worth checking in any quote you get — ours included:
- Is the disposal fee in it? Dump fees are a real cost. If they are not in the quote, they turn up in the invoice.
- Is the carry in it? Some quotes price a kerbside pickup and charge again for stairs.
- Is it per item or by volume? Per-item pricing is fine for one couch and expensive for a flat.
- Are they insured, and can they prove it? This is the one that costs you a day rather than money. Most Brooklyn buildings with a managing agent require a certificate of insurance before a crew is allowed in the service elevator. An uninsured two-guys-and-a-van is cheaper right up until your building turns them away at the door.

Getting it down the stairs
Parlour-floor stairs are narrow, there is usually a turn at the landing, and the bannister is often original and not something anyone wants gouged. Sofas and mattresses come apart when they have to. The cellar
Half the brownstones in Brooklyn have a cellar reached by a hatch in the sidewalk or a narrow stair under the stoop, and what's down there has usually been down there for decades — boilers, storm doors, paint, tools, a century of the building's own history.

Brooklyn houses stay in families. When one turns over there is often a closing date attached, family who don't live nearby, and three or four floors that nobody has been through properly in years.
We walk it with you first, free. Anything usable is sorted for donation rather than thrown, and you get the receipts.
If documents, photographs or jewellery need to be found before anything moves, say so and we'll work slowly and flag what turns up. Most houses clear in a day or two, and we can do a partial demolition in the same visit if the property needs to be shown empty and stripped.
Can you come the same day — in Williamsburg, DUMBO, anywhere?
Yes, borough-wide, seven days a week. Book before noon and there's usually a same-day window that afternoon. Weekends are no extra charge, which matters for closings and move-outs that land on a Saturday.
Two Brooklyn-specific things. If you're in a building with a managing agent — most of new Williamsburg, DUMBO and Downtown — the freight elevator usually has to be booked, often to weekday hours, and the building will want a certificate of insurance naming it.
We carry one and send it over before the job. Send us the building's requirements when you book and we'll deal with the super directly.
And if the truck can't get a spot outside, that's our problem, not yours. We work around alternate side and we don't charge you because the street was full.
One couch, one mattress, one fridge
You don't need a whole truck to call us, and sometimes you don't need us at all.
Sanitation will take large household items at the kerb free, up to six per collection day — so if it's one couch you're willing to put out on a trash day, that's the cheaper answer and we'll say so. Mattresses have to be sealed in a plastic bag first; the City enforces it and an unwrapped one can cost you a fine of up to $300.
Where we're worth calling for a single item:
- It's in a cellar or on a fourth floor and you can't get it out yourself
- It's a refrigerator, freezer or air conditioner — refrigerant means it can't just go to the kerb
- It's a TV, monitor or computer — electronics are banned from New York City's regular trash
- It's construction material a contractor left, which Sanitation doesn't collect
- You need it gone today rather than on Thursday
Dumpsters and permits, briefly
Brooklyn mostly has nowhere to put one. If you have a driveway or a private yard, a container is often cheaper than a truck for a week-long job — 10-yard around $670, 15-yard around $740, 7-day rental included.
