Staten Island is the borough with actual yards. That changes what "junk removal" means here. Instead of a fourth-floor walk-up and a coffee table, it's a garage nobody has parked in since 2019, a shed with a rotted floor, an above-ground pool that came down two summers ago, and a basement full of things that survived a flood and were never quite dealt with.

How much does junk removal cost on Staten Island?
You pay for the space your stuff takes up in the truck, starting at a one-eighth-truck minimum. That price covers everything — two people, the lifting, the carry-out, the truck, the disposal fees at the other end, and sweeping up after. There is no separate labour charge, no fuel surcharge, and no travel fee for crossing the island.

If you'd rather load it yourself over a week, a driveway dumpster is often cheaper: 10-yard, around $670 and 15-yard, around $740, both with a 7-day rental included — one ton of weight on the 10-yard, a ton and a half on the 15. Heavy material like concrete, soil or tile gets quoted upfront rather than surprising you on the invoice.

What will the City take for free — and when do you actually need a hauler?

Does the Sanitation Department pick up furniture and mattresses?
Yes, and it's free. DSNY collects large household items at the curb — couches, dressers, tables, bed frames — up to six large items per collection day. Put them out on a trash day, not a recycling day. Metal and rigid plastic items go out with recycling instead; everything else goes with the trash.
Two rules catch people out:
Mattresses and box springs must be sealed in a plastic bag before they go to the curb. This is a bed-bug rule and the City enforces it — putting one out unwrapped can cost you a fine of up to $300. Bags are a few dollars at any hardware store on Forest Avenue or Hylan Boulevard.
Rugs and carpets need to be rolled up and tied with twine, then set out with the trash.

Will the City take my renovation debris?
Mostly no, and this is the one that surprises homeowners mid-project.
DSNY will take do-it-yourself construction material — old cabinets, a toilet, a sink, some drywall — under the same six-item limit. But once a contractor is involved, the City's own instruction is explicit: the work is not collected, and "the contractor or resident must arrange for a dumpster through a private trash removal service."
That's us. We're a licensed, insured demolition and construction company, so a kitchen gut, a bathroom tear-out, a deck, a fence or a garage full of framing lumber is a normal Tuesday — and the debris leaves on the same truck as the demo crew.
A few materials never go in regular waste at all, including asbestos. If you suspect it, stop and get it tested before anyone touches it. We'll tell you the same thing on the phone.
What about refrigerators, air conditioners and electronics?
These have their own rules and the City can refuse them and fine you.
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers contain refrigerant and need special handling before disposal. Electronics and e-waste are banned from the regular trash in New York City outright — no TVs, monitors or computers at the curb.
We handle all of it as part of a normal pickup: the refrigerant appliances go to a processor licensed to recover the gas, and electronics go to an e-waste recycler. You don't need to schedule anything separately or drive anything to a drop-off.
Mattresses have to be bagged
Sealed in plastic before it reaches the curb. It's a bed-bug rule and the City enforces it. Bags are a few dollars at any hardware store on Forest Avenue or Hylan Boulevard.

Can you take down a shed, deck or above-ground pool?
Yes — this is the part most junk removal companies can't do, because they're haulers and we're a demolition company.
Sheds, decks, above-ground pools, fences, hot tubs, playsets and garages: one crew arrives, takes it apart, and hauls the debris away on the same visit. You don't book a demo contractor for Tuesday and a hauler for Thursday, and you don't have a pile of splintered decking sitting on your lawn in between.
Concrete, patio slabs and walkways too — heavy material is quoted upfront because weight is the real cost, not volume.
How fast can you get to Staten Island?

What happens to everything you haul away?
Between 60 and 80 per cent of every load is recycled, donated or repurposed rather than landfilled. Furniture and appliances in usable condition go to local charities, metal goes to scrap, electronics go to an e-waste processor, and clean wood and building material gets separated out. Only what genuinely can't be recovered goes to a transfer station.
