Junk Removal in the Bronx
The Bronx is really two boroughs wearing one name, and junk removal works differently in each.
South and west, it's pre-war buildings — six-storey walk-ups in Fordham and Mount Hope, elevator buildings in Concourse and Mott Haven, a super who wants paperwork before anyone touches the freight elevator. East and north, it's houses: Country Club, Throgs Neck, Pelham Bay, City Island, Riverdale — garages, basements, back yards, sheds.
We do both, and we're a junk removal and demolition company, based in Lynbrook. That second half is the part most haulers can't offer: we don't just carry out what's inside the shed, we can take the shed.
In the Bronx we work apartments, walk-ups and houses, and we carry the certificate of insurance your building needs so the crew gets past the doorman and into the freight elevator. How much does junk removal cost in the Bronx?
You pay for the space your stuff takes up in the truck, starting at a one-eighth-truck minimum. That price covers everything — two people, the lifting, the carry-down, the truck, the disposal fees at the other end, and sweeping up after. There's no separate labour charge, no fuel surcharge, and no travel fee for any part of the borough.
Two things move the number. Volume is the main one. Weight is the other, and it only applies to heavy material — concrete, soil, tile, plaster — which we quote upfront rather than adding to your invoice afterwards.

Can you work in my apartment building?
This is the Bronx question, and it's the one national haulers quietly get wrong.
Do you carry a certificate of insurance?
Yes, and we'll send it to your management company before the job rather than arguing about it in the lobby.
Most Bronx buildings — anything with a managing agent, and effectively every co-op — require a certificate of insurance naming the building as additional insured before a crew is allowed to use the service elevator. A hauler who can't produce one on request isn't getting past your doorman, and you'll have taken a day off for nothing.

What about the service elevator?
We book it. Most buildings restrict moving and heavy carrying to weekday business hours and require the freight elevator to be reserved in advance, sometimes with a deposit. Tell us your building and we'll work to their window instead of turning up and being turned away.
And if there's no elevator at all?
Half the housing stock south of Fordham Road is a four- to six-storey pre-war walk-up, and that's a normal job for us — it's what the crew is for. A third-floor apartment cleanout in a walk-up takes longer than the same apartment in an elevator building, and that's reflected in the quote from the photo, not discovered halfway down the stairs.
Street parking is the other Bronx reality. We work around alternate side, and we don't charge you because the truck had to sit two buildings down.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster in the Bronx?
Only if it goes on the street — and if it does, you can't pull the permit yourself.
This catches out more Bronx homeowners than anything else on this page, because unlike Staten Island, plenty of Bronx houses have no driveway to put a container in.
On your own property — a driveway, a yard, a private lot — no City permit is needed. We drop it, you fill it, we take it.
On a City street or sidewalk, the Department of Transportation has to issue a permit, and DOT issues it to a registered carting company or a registered general contractor. Not to the property owner. So a homeowner cannot simply rent a container and put it at the kerb — the company placing it has to be registered and has to pull the permit.
We are a DOT-registered carter, so we pull that permit for you. You do not file anything, you do not go to a City office, and you do not need to work out which of the two container permits your job falls under. That is the difference between a local carter and a national booking service that subcontracts your job to whoever answers.
Two more limits worth knowing before you plan around one:
- A bulk item container — the kind you'd use for a house or apartment cleanout — can sit on the street for up to five consecutive days, and it can't take construction material from a worksite.
- A construction debris container is a different permit, requires a worksite with a Department of Buildings permit, and can stay up to 90 days.
We'll tell you which one your job needs, and whether it needs a permit at all, before you book rather than after the truck arrives — and if it needs one, we file it.
If you'd rather load it yourself over a week, a driveway container is often cheaper than a truckload: 10-yard, around $670 and 15-yard, around $740, both with a 7-day rental included — one ton of weight on the 10-yard, a ton and a half on the 15.

The kind you'd use for a house or apartment cleanout can sit on a City street for up to five consecutive days, and can't take construction material from a worksite.
Construction debris containers
A different permit, and it requires a worksite with a Department of Buildings permit. Up to ninety days once it's issued.
What will the City take for free — and when do you actually need us?
Some Bronx junk doesn't need us at all, and we'd rather say so than sell you a truck.
Sanitation collects large household items at the kerb, free — couches, dressers, tables, bed frames — up to six large items per collection day. Put them out on a trash day, not a recycling day. Metal and rigid plastic go out with recycling instead.
Two rules catch people out. Mattresses and box springs have to be sealed in a plastic bag before they reach the kerb; it's a bed-bug rule, the City enforces it, and putting one out unwrapped can cost you a fine of up to $300. Rugs and carpets need to be rolled and tied with twine.
Where the City stops:
Renovation debris, once a contractor is involved. DSNY will take genuine do-it-yourself material under the same six-item limit, but work done by a contractor isn't collected — a private hauler has to take it.
That's us, and because we're a licensed, insured demolition and construction company, a kitchen gut or a bathroom tear-out leaves on the same truck as the crew that did it.
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers, which contain refrigerant and need handling before disposal. Electronics, which are banned from New York City's regular trash outright — no TVs, monitors or computers at the kerb.
We take all of it on a normal pickup: refrigerant appliances go to a licensed processor, electronics to an e-waste recycler. Nothing for you to schedule or drive anywhere.
And anything containing asbestos never goes in regular waste. If you suspect it in a pre-war building — and the Bronx has a lot of pre-war buildings — stop and get it tested before anyone touches it. We'll tell you the same thing on the phone.
Mattresses have to be bagged
Sealed in plastic before it reaches the kerb. It's a bed-bug rule and the City enforces it. A few dollars of plastic against a three-hundred-dollar ticket.
Six large items, and that's the cap
Per collection day, at the kerb, free. Where we earn our money is the apartment that holds thirty items, not six.
Can you take down a shed, deck or garage?
Yes, and on the east side of the borough this is half of what we do.
Sheds, decks, above-ground pools, fences, hot tubs, playsets and garages: one crew arrives, takes it apart, and hauls the debris away on the same visit. You don't book a demolition contractor for Tuesday and a hauler for Thursday, and you don't live with a pile of splintered decking in the meantime.
Concrete, patio slabs and walkways too — quoted upfront, because weight is the real cost there, not volume.
How fast can you get to the Bronx?
Same-day and next-day, seven days a week. Book before noon and there's a good chance of a same-day window. Weekends are no extra charge, which matters for estate cleanouts, closings and move-outs that land on a Saturday.
Apartment jobs are the exception, and not because of us — if your building only permits freight elevator use on weekdays, that's the window we have to work in.

What happens to everything you haul away?
Between 60 and 80 per cent of every load is recycled, donated or repurposed rather than landfilled. Furniture and appliances in usable condition go to local charities, metal goes to scrap, electronics go to an e-waste processor, and clean wood and building material is separated out. Only what genuinely can't be recovered goes to a transfer station.
